CLOSURE No.2 in CANTON DESPATCH No.72 to H.M.A. SHANGHAI of 4/4/39.

44

Japanese Consulate General,

CANTON.

March 20th, 1939.

Sir and dear Colleague,

In confirmation of my conversation with you yesterday,

concerning the call of the Japanese Government Chartered

Vessel to the port of Hong Kong, I beg to request you to

be good enough to consult with the Hong Kong Authorities

that a part of paragraph 3 of the Memorandum be amended to

read:-

"if the desired visits on the part of the Japanese

Government Chartered Vessels exceed four in each

direction per four weeks, or if the desired visits

on the part of such British vessels exceed two in

each direction per four weeks."

Pending the agreement to the above proposal, I should

like to ask you to be good enough to ascertain whether there

is any objection on the part of the Hong Kong Authorities

to the calls of the 3.3. Suzan Maru and the 3.3. Canton

Maru at Hong Kong on about March 24th, and March 29th,

respectively, as an exceptional case. If the British

Authorities agree to such calls, the exact date of arrival

of each vessel at Hong Kong will be notified to you as soon

as possible.

A.P. BLUNT, Esquire,

H.B.M. Consul General,

CANTON.

I have the honour, etc.,

(signed) K.Okazaki.

CONSUL-GENERAL.
